Abstract
Object : Many products including raw materials from herbal medicine to promote hair growth have been developed. Although strong candidates are effective they have often undesirable effects. Purpose of this study, followed by previous study, is to evaluate the safety for verification of the possibility as a alternative natural medication on alopecia,

Methods£ºWe prepared ethanol extract from modified Haeae-tang by Artemisia argyi Folium. After adaptation, 6w-aged C57BL/6 mice were divided into 3 groups including normal (vehicle), herbal medication (HM) group and 5% minoxidil-treated (Minoxidil, positive control) group. The vehicle or testing samples were daily treated with 0.2ml on hair-shaved dorsal skin of mice for 15 days, respectively. Desirable and untoward effects of vehicle or testing samples on hair growth were observed with a visual monitoring on the initial, 5th, 10th, 15th day, respectively. Also, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities, relevant to liver function, were examined in serum. And body and liver weights were determined during or after the experiment period.

Result£ºHerbal Medication (HM) did not induce significant irritable dermal sign on visual inspection. At 15 days of treatment the HM, hair growth in that group was significantly improved compared to the CON. AST, ALT levels in serum, changes in body and liver weight were not significantly increased in HM group compared to the Minoxidil treatment group and/or CON group.

Conclusion£ºHerbal Medication (Haeae-tang, HM) external application in animal model with alopecia promoted hair growth without monitored harmful responses.
